Irish I could Russia on over there and Sweden your day

Something scary happened to me this past weekend. Like really scary

I had an identity crisis.
I was involved in so many cultures and so many countries' celebrations that at one point I forgot who I was.

Let me explain now.....
Friday March 14, 2014
Earlier that week, I was asked if I could work a dinner for a staff party and make the food. I happily accepted, because making dinner for people is fun for me and I had nothing else to do on a Friday night (I'm so lively).
The theme of the staff party was Russian theme so I had to make Russian food, a thing I had never made in my entire life, but was willing to try.
I mean how many times am I going to make a Russian meal for a staff party in my whole life?
And also my payment was in attendance at the staff party and alcohol, so I was all on board.

I started at 2pm, prepping all the food and getting everything ready with my co-workers. The items on the menu?
Borscht
Beef stroganoff
Kahlua and Vodka Brownies

We first began prepping the vegetables and beef for the two main dishes. My co-worker was in charge of chopping the vegetables and I was in charge of hacking and defeating the monstrous ball that was called roast beef.
5.8 Kilos (12 lbs) monstrous roast beef to cut, de-fat, chop and cook.
By the time I had finished this monster, my co-worker had peeled and chopped onions, beets and carrots.
I'm obviously the skilled worker.
My co-workers and I then assembled the Borscht, Stroganoff and I obviously made the brownies. Finished cooking everything that we could before 6pm and then once we were done headed off downstairs to where the Russia theme staff party was.
This is, as seen before, a songbook that was placed on the table where I once again attempted to sing in Swedish and failed.
BUT, great news, I was sitting next to a girl from Seattle who has been living in Sweden for 2 years and spoke it, and she complemented my attempt at Swedish and said that my pronunciation during one of the songs was really good despite me only knowing a few words.
Of course I freaked out and thanked her non-stop because that is probably and only the first time a person will ever complement my Swedish.

And this is the beer that I drank along with Russian Vodka and a special kind of Swedish alcohol because you know do as the Russians do: drink a lot of vodka.
If you are wondering, no Russian came out of my mouth while drinking these beverages, if it did I would be really surprised at myself. Like really surprised.
The night ended well, the food was gone within minutes, my Swedish semi-improved and I went to the after party, where I danced on tables singing Bon Jovi, but don't tell my mother or she'll make fun of me for a long time.

Monday March 17th, 2014
The day of the Irish.
My day began with sleeping in since I didn't have class and of course sporting green because that's what I was told to wear on this day ever since I was 5. After eating lunch, I walked over to downtown to small cafe called Sandy's where I had a delicious chai latte and attempted to work on a group paper with my friends Jenn, Madeleine and Cassie. From there, we dropped our stuff off at Madeleine's place and then headed off to Norrland's Pub, Orvars Krog and had green beer and a burger and I got a free Guinness hat.
As I said before in a posted Instagram picture:
I am an American living in Sweden celebrating an Irish holiday.
Major identity crisis right there.

Also I had an Irish coffee which was a little too Irish for my taste.
At around 9pm we headed out, (I know we're old) and walked home since we had class the next day at 10AM.
And that concludes my weekend filled identity crisis. If you are worried, I'm ok the weird weather (which will be posted soon) got the identity crisis off my mind, but I am going to the UK which is another culture but thankfully they speak the same language so I'm not too worried to have an identity crisis.
Enjoy this post and hope the only crisis that happens in your life you running out of Nutella or my newest obsession chocolate muffins.
More posts to come to make up for the lack of posts there will be for the week I'll be gone.

March 19, 2014

let's have s'mores and then some more

March 13th, 2014
As probably mentioned in previous posts, there are certain things that are not here in Sweden but are in the states. For example:
Chocolate chips
Graham crackers
Sugar coated kid's cereal
Broth
Evaporated Milk
Condensed Milk
Thick Crust Pizza
and
S'mores

On Thursday, Sweden was bright and sunny and beautiful just like when I first came and as a Californian at heart, I need the sun and sunshine keeps me alive.
So upbeat, happy me decided to bake some s'mores.
And in relation to the beginning statement above, people in the states, so grateful and lucky, have grown up with the campfire treat of S'mores.
Graham crackers with Hershey's chocolate piece and a roasted marshmallow all smushed together to create a chocolatey, gooey, sticky, sugary delicious summer treat.
For those reading and are not familiar with what a S'more looks like or can't quite get the full picture in your head, here is the full picture here:
So on this sunny day I made an adaptation of these summer treats

S'mores Bars
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/3 cups flour
3/4 cups graham crackers (or Maria cookies if graham crackers don't exist where you are)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 milk chocolate bars-whole
1 1/2 cups marshmallows or marshmallow fluff

Preheat oven to 350F.
Cream butter, sugar, brown sugar, egg and vanilla together in a large bowl.
In a separate bowl, stir flour, graham crackers, baking powder and salt.
Slowly incorporate dry ingredients into butter mixture.
Press half of the dough on greased 9x9 baking pan.
Set chocolate bars on top.
Spread marshmallow (fluff) over chocolate and top with remaining dough.
Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden and marshmallows are oozing out.
Leave out for corridor mates and watch it disappear within hours.
I really missed this view.

I tried to cut the bars to make them easier to serve, but they were too gooey to lift so I left them cut and let my corridor mates just eat it out of the pan.
I don't think they minded.

Hope to have s'more sunshine coming soon and hope your day has s'more sunshine as well.
And yes, there will be s'more puns coming up, it's not a blog post without some puns.

March 10, 2014

wrap up

Here are some things that happened to me this week that I feel like you should know/appreciate:

1. My class that I was supposed to have on Thursday got moved to Friday morning which was no big deal. Then Friday morning came and I woke up early (7:30 AM), took my time getting ready, walked to class- because my monthly bus pass expired and now with the nice weather I walk to school- stopped at the small grocery store to get my fresh chocolate muffins on sale for 2 for $2- got coffee at school, sat down and was 30 minutes early, opened up my messages and mid way through my muffin saw that class was canceled.
Are you fuckin' (mom I'm sorry for the f-bomb) kidding me?
I was already at my building ready to go and this happened. I didn't want to walk back, because I was supposed to meet with my group at 12 and didn't want to walk back and forth so many times, but luckily I found out that my friends Kacey and Sofie were with other classmates also at the building so I just hung out with them until 12 when I had to meet with my group.
My professor ended up re-scheduling the class until today at 10AM, but then emailed us again saying she wasn't going to be there.
I swear, this professor drives me crazy. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love when a class gets canceled just like the next college student does, but when you reschedule 3 times and we all have to wake up early, then it's not fun anymore.
And no, if you are wondering, this women is not named Carol, but she does need to get her shit together.

2. That same morning upset and frustrated I had to write that same professor an email asking a question about a seminar/presentation that we had to do.
Now if you have lived with me or know me well, I am not a morning person and do not function until 12PM and this is why.
While writing this important, student-professional- sounding email to this professor, I did these three things:
-Instead of writing the professor's actual name, Cecilia Strand, I wrote Dear Cecily Strong, the comedian and Weekend Update anchor on Saturday Night Live, pictured below:
Dammit.
- Also, instead of writing the words "textbooks" and "Hollywood" I wrote the words, textBOOBS and HollyFOOD. I really should not be allowed to write important emails before 12PM.

2. That same night, I went to a corridor party to celebrate my corridor mate's birthday, who I promised to make a birthday cake, but forgot, but we're not going to mention that.

3. The next day, I met up with my friends to work on our group paper, had some late lunch/early dinner and then headed off to my friend Sofie's to celebrate her birthday which was yesterday. We went on a pub crawl to 4 pubs and I ate an entire plate of nachos.

No joke, I can eat an entire plate of nachos on my own, I'm pretty proud of this.

4. Sunday I did nothing but go to cafes and research information for my paper and admire the sun that was in Uppsala. And by admiring the sun, I mean wear a tank top in my room with the window open and not be cold even though it was in the high 40s. It was beautiful.
5. As said before, my lecture was moved to Monday, but then my professor, not Cecily Strong, emailed the class in the morning stating she wasn't going to be there and that there was going to be a substitute lecturer. But I didn't go, not because of my frustration, because I had scheduled to work at a nation, because I wasn't supposed to have class today.
I started work at 10:30AM and finished at 3:30PM. I cut vegetables and made a carrot cake where I had to times the recipe by 5.
Have you ever had to times a recipe by 5? Like you see the batter get bigger and bigger and start to scare yourself and the people around you?
Yeah, it was pretty scary.

And that's a wrap of my days, I hoped you enjoyed it and got frustrated just like I did.
Also, this is my new jam that I enjoy and fell in love with Paul Rudd.

100 days

March 4th,2014

I recently sat down at my desk after a self pep talk and downloaded an app to countdown the days until I had to return home to the States.
It was time that I had to hit reality.
It was tough, don't get me wrong, but it had to be done and also I was curious to know how long I really had until I had to return to the states.
Turns out that Tuesday on March 4th, I had 100 days left in this country.
Reality bit me right in the cold Swedish butt.

With that realization, I had another realization, it was National Semla Day in Uppsala.
What's National Semla Day? You Ask.
A semla, or a "cream bun"as called by my automatic translator on my computer, is a cardamom-wheat bun with the top cut off. Inside is filled with almond paste, milk and the inside of the bun and filled with cream then topped with the cut off top like a top hat.
Norrlands Nation, the nation where I "live" now because I'm there at least once or twice a week, hosted a nightly fika selling different flavors of semlas:
Original
Vanilla
Lemon
Raspberry
Chocolate
served with sweet potato soup, it was a delicious way to eat my feelings after the tough realization.

Also apparently March 4th was national pancake day in the states, Happy Belated Pancake day to all back home. 94 days until I see American pancakes.
Oh yeah, I didn't tell you? Swedish pancakes aren't like American pancakes, so I haven't actually seen a big fluffy oversized American pancake since August, wrap that around your head.

and the Oscar goes to...

Sunday March 2nd, 2014
I've been waiting for this day for 365 days now.
As mentioned many times, the Oscars are my thing and on Sunday it happened. I was like a little kid on Christmas day, all jittery and excited for presents (Oscars) to be opened and to stuff my face with sweets.
Fast forward to 8pm where I arrived at my friend Sofie's place and started baking for the event
Oreo Cheesecake Cupcakes and Chocolate Coconut Bars were on the menu, along with Bruschetta made by Sofie's friend, Elin, then Crustini's with Brie, Basil and Chili made by Kacey and then Pull Apart bread with cheese, bacon and seasoning made by Cassie.

Not pictured: Cupcakes and Coconut Bars
With plenty of food came decorations that Sofie had put in her apartment to set the mood
Golden balloons to represent the Golden Oscar

The above picture is one of those digital frames that were the "it" thing to have in photography a couple of years ago, here Sofie collected pictures from past Oscars and put them in the digital frame.
The above picture is my idol, Tina Fey with the ever-so-gorgeous Robert Downey Jr, but as you can see the moment I took the picture, the frame fizzled out and changed.
At least I still got a picture of Tina Fey though.

This next picture followed the Tina Fey and Robert Downey Jr picture, which this above picture is from last years Oscars when Family Guy creator, Seth McFarlane, hosted.

This is no decoration, this is my friend Kacey covered in decoration.
Here on the Swedish red carpet Kacey went back to the 80s and sporting a gold beaded headband around the forehead. She is also working the bedazzled style Kanye West- like sunglasses and wearing around her neck, a curled gold ribbon wrapped around twice.
::Stay tuned for tomorrow's episode of The Fashion Police to see what Joan Rivers has to say about this ensemble.::

This is not a real Oscar.
This is a plastic form of an Oscar that my friend Sofie bought for her parents, in Los Angeles when she went and visited the Kodak Theater.
Also I apologize for the decapitation of the Oscar award, I didn't realize until after the picture was taken that the Oscar's head was gone.

Before the Oscar's were aired, Sofie created a "Who Do You Think Will Win?" list which would be tallied to see who was the most accurate.
Here were my thoughts:
Best Picture: American Hustle
Best Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio- The Wolf of Wall Street
Best Actress: Amy Adams -American Hustle
Best Supporting Actor: Jared Leto - Dallas Buyers Club
Best Supporting Actress:  Lupita Nyong'o - 12 Years A Slave
Best Director- Alfonso Cuarón - Gravity
Best Foreign Language Film- The Hunt (Denmark)
Best Animated Feature Film- Frozen
Best Original Song- "Let It Go"- Frozen
Best Documentary Series- Cutie and the Boxer
I got 5 out of 10. The nominees and actors will be posted at the end of this blog.

It would not be an awards ceremony without an Awards Ceremony drinking game.
To have a closer look here was the game we came up with:
SIP IF:
Ellen DeGeneres Dances
Ellen DeGeneres mentions her wife Portia
Cuts to Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tam Honks
Someone Starts Crying
Someone pronounces Chiwetel Ejiofor or Lupita Nyong'o
Every time someone gets beeped for swearing

GULP
If Ellen does a musical number
If someone mentions Seth McFarlane
If someone messes up reading the teleprompter
Trips
1st nomination and 1st win
Every "All Right, All Right, All Right"
Shia LeBeouf Joke
Any time Martin Scorsese is mentioned

FINISH DRINK
If Alfonso Cuarón wins Best Director
Bad Grandpa wins Best Makeup
Let It Go wins Best Original Song

What we weren't aware of was...
Ellen DeGeneres did not dance or mention Portia
Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio were shown too many times
We should have stated if anyone's name was mispronounced (we are all looking at you Jorn Tromolto aka John Travolta)
No one messed up
Someone tripped - looking at you J.Law
Lots of people had their first nomination and first win
Alfonso Cuarón did win Best Director which was a favorite
Bad Grandpa did NOT win Best Makeup, which was a huge relief for us
Let It Go won Best Original Song and we all cheered.

Also I forgot to mention that we saw the Oscars live but from American time, so we had to stay up until 2AM to watch the Oscars and 30 minutes in I fell asleep. Not like cat nap asleep like passed out and could not get my eyes open asleep.
Go (Grandma) Me
But I was not the only one as at every hour, one person fell asleep until 5AM when I woke up and everyone was asleep.
I don't feel so old after all.
Luckily the next morning we read Tweets, articles and watched YouTube videos of the clips that we missed and got the full run-down of who won.

Overall my thoughts on the Oscars were quite good, here are some of the comments, though, that I feel should be said.
1.As much as Matthew McConaughey was good in Dallas Buyers Club, I really really really wanted, along with other girls, Leonardo DiCaprio to win. I mean that whole scene where he is crawling down the stairs and into his car is amazing and genius. And ever since I laid eyes on Leonardo DiCaprio when I was 11 years old and first saw the Titanic, I always wanted him to win.
Also I was going to use his win to give me hope that I will soon get a Swedish boyfriend despite the fact that I only have 3 months here.
My hopes were crushed when he didn't, I guess there goes my chances.

2. John Travolta and the pronunciation of Idina Menzel's name.
Now before I bash on Travolta's flub, let me just say this. As a person with an uncommon name, I have experienced mispronunciation my whole life. No exaggeration there. So when Idina's name was mispronounced, I felt for her.
But let's be real. How does one get Adele Dazim from Idina Menzel? It's like that one time a friend commented on a tagged picture of me on Facebook and spelt my name
"Estaboolise"
It still baffles me to this day both the off-spelling of my name and Travolta's attempt at pronouncing Menzel's name.
#uncommonfirstnameproblems

3. Pharrell Williams performance of "Happy" from Despicable Me
I have one and only one thing to say about this.
MERYL STREEP SHIMMIED AT THE ACADEMY AWARDS AND MY ENTIRE LIFE IS MADE. OK GOODBYE

4. Jared Leto's speech was amazing and made me cry.

And that is all.
Enjoy your Oscar goodie bags a week later and hope you are still recovering from that hangover.
Goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow.

the letter A

Let me tell you wht hppened t work tody nd why there is missing letter in this post.
Sturdy ws csul in tht I worked Lördsdg fik t Norrlnds Ntion.
I ws in chrge of bred nd getting them redy for mking sndwiches. Prt of the process is cutting the bred so tht we could put the filling nd dried mets nd such in them. In the midst of cutting the bgel with the newly shrped bred knife, somehow my finger nd the knife slipped nd I ended up cutting the tip of my pinky finger. Since, I've cut my finger before vrious times in the short yers I've been cooking, I just thought it ws just the norml cut.
Nope.
While my wonderful friend from Bkersfield, Kcey, ws helping me put pressure on my finger nd finding the first id kit, I looked t the wound nd sw tht I cut the piece of skin off on the tip nd the piece of skin ws hnging off my finger still ttched. Not wnting to bother it or do nything to it (lso becuse I'm not studying to be nurse or ny form of medicl field) my friend Kcey wrpped it up s bst s she could, with the substitue bnd-ids for tpe.
For the rest of the dy, I hd to wer the glove tht ws the size too big for my finger nd hd to wer it bckwrds so it looked like I hd the hnd of Mickey Mouse the whole work shift. Couple of hours lter I went to chnge the wound. My boss cme in the cfe to check it out nd sid tht I hd to go to the emergency room becuse she thought I would need stitches. I freked out. Even thought I'm 20 yers old, I don't like hospitls nd the thought of getting stitches scred me.
I hd to go regrdless.
My boss ended up coming with me to show me where the hospitl ws, which ws surprisingly only 20 minute wlk.
20 minute wit lter, it ws my turn to see the nurse. Unwrpping the guze, the pin of my finger ws coming bck. She nlyzed it, sked wht hppened nd fter sid the most soothing words I needed to her:
" You don't need stitches"
I brethed, the only thing she needed to do ws to cut off the piece of skin tht ws still ttched, wrp it up tightly in guze nd tpe nd then recommended me to chnge it frequently if needed.
If you re ever so curious to know wht my finger looked like, this is the only picture tht I could tke of my finger: (note: there will be grphic imges- There Will Be Blood )
See tht piece of chunk on the left?
Tht's my skin tht I sliced off
(I pologize for the grphic imge, but I knew tht some people re into this kind of stuff nd might be curious.
I'm just trying to stisfy people of ll rnges here on this blog.

This is my finger, not grphic, wrpped up clenly nd protected. The sweet nurse gve me plenty of guze nd lce tpe for my finger for the next couple of dys.
She did mentioned, however, tht when showering, I would hve to wrp my finger in plstic so it doesn't get wet.
Which brings me to my next mini-post within this post:
SHOWERING WITH N INJURED FINGER
Mondy night:
My norml shower routine goes like this:
1. Strt the shower to get the wter the right temperture, even though I end up plying with it when I get in.
2. Grb my towe nd undress
3. Spend 5 minutes picking the right song to enter the shower into - it's crucil
4. Enter shower, ply with the temperture- enter into deep thoughts
Mondy's routine went differently.
Before I even strted the shower, I spent 20 minutes thinking of one wy to wrp my finger.
I didn't hve ny plstic bgs in my room nor plstic wrp. The only thing I could find in my kitchen ws luminum foil, which I wsn't sure if it would work. So I ended up tking one plstic pkge nd wrpping it round my finger with one rubber bnd. The end product of it reminded me of the dress my girl Jennifer Lwrence wore in the 2013 Golden Globes:

I men who wore it best? Let's be rel.
The plstic ended up filing, but luckily I decided to chnge the guze fter my shower, which the process looked like I ws going to conduct surgery, which lter mde me regret not pying ttention to the show ER when I ws little.
The operting sttion.
Note: the thing on my injured pinky is now the scr, nd I ws not bleeding, tht is one piece of cloth tht the nurse put on, so the wound would not stick to the guze, it's just dried blood on it , tht's it.

My ttmept t wrpping my finger. I'm ctully quite proud of this, for only studying Medi nd hiding behind one pillow during episodes of ER when I ws little.
The nurse sid my finger would hel in couple of weeks, so hopefully when I go to London (oh did I forget tht I'm going to London for one week t the end of the month? yeh...i m) you will not see this white cst round my finger, but probbly some mustche bndges my sister bought for me before I left. Until then, if the letter A does not pper in some letters in future posts, tht is why. I hope you didn't hve much trouble reding this s I hd trouble typing this.

P.A.L.T

Friday February 28th,
For the seven months that I've been here, I've heard stories about a certain dish that is served at Norrlands Nation on the last Friday of every month. At first, I thought it was a myth when my friends described it and last month one of my friends tried to take me to have this mythical dish but when we got there it was gone.
There I thought I knew it was a myth, like my university mascot, the seawolf.
But then on Friday, I felt like I was on an episode of Mythbusters when this mythical dish was brought upon me.
Called PALT, this Swedish dish consists of a huge ball of dough filled with bacon and then big chunks of bacon and small little lingonberries surrounded by it.
It is the most popular dish and all the Swedes go crazy for it.
It's delicious and just like the unicorn and the Loch Ness Monster, my disbelief in this myth was changed.
The un-mythical PALT
which in my book, is an acronym for Pure Awesomeness Like Totally.
because it is like totally pure awesomeness
